On Friday, Nov. 7, the LIU Post field hockey team play its first of two games over the weekend. The game against Bellarmine University ended with a jubilant 5-0 win for the Pioneers. Two goals from junior forward Keliann Margiotta alongside two from freshman forward Kaycee Zelkovsky ensured the Green and Gold would make easy work of Bellarmine and go into their next match full of confidence.

The second match featured the Pioneers and Saint Anselm College on Sunday, Nov. 9. LIU picked up its ninth conference win of the season, which elevated the Pioneers to the top spot in the Northeast-10 Conference standings. It took just nine minutes for the Pioneers offense to break through. Great work from Margiotta provided senior forward Stephanie Ruhle a chance to draw first blood. It then didn’t take long for senior forward Lyn-Marie Wilson to open her assault, the first came unassisted after 24 minutes. The second came as the Pioneers were awarded a penalty, which Wilson converted to secure a 3-1 lead going into the halftime break.

The Pioneers continued their tenacity in the second half, pounding Saint Anselm’s defense. Wilson was at the head of the spear as she converted another opportunity, giving her four goals of the day. The Saint Anselm offense only managed a measly three shots compared to 20 shots for the Pioneers.

Sitting atop the conference going into the final regular season match, sophomore defender Abi Sawyer said, “I really want to finish the season on a high, [and] winning against American International would be a great way to finish the regular season.”

The Pioneers are back in action for their regular season finale this afternoon at 4 p.m. against American International.
